Climb when you're ready!

Martin testing the arete

You don't have to be macho to climb here!

The Bridge

After a concerted effort for the last week we are thrilled to announce that Redpoint will be OPEN from 12 noon on Sunday 3rd February.

The routes are up and awaiting your consensus on the grades and Rock On is bulging with climbing gear.

There's a bit more skirting and fettling to be done but we don't think that you'll notice cause you'll be too busy climbing.

The Starship Entreprises lands on 22nd Feb, but meanwhile there's plenty of bouldering to keep you entertained.

Opening hours are 12 till 10pm Monday to Friday and 10 till 8 at weekends.

We can't wait to see you!

A group of us set a date to visit on Saturday 9th so, i am keen for this week to pass now, that the opening has been confirmed! Not sure what the Starship Enterprise is about? Does this mean there will only be bouldering available 12noon till 8pm for a couple of weeks?

Hi Mr G

I think the starship Entreprise is the new entreprise bouldering wall. (see some of the earlier blogs)

Looks like all the top rope, lead walls and boulbering room are up and running.

At the moment there are 50 lines and 31 in-situ tope ropes. 38 of the lines are equipped for leading.

For boulderers there's a bouldering cave area with problems and traverses.

On 22nd Feb Entreprises (hence the pun) are installing a state of the art bouldering wall on the mezzanine floor. For a preview of what this will look like, click on the 'News' tab above.

Popped in yesterday (Sunday) and it was awesome to see how your week's concerted effort has made that difference - morphing (Mirfing?) the place from a bunch of climbing walls in a hangar to an actual climbing centre. WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!!!!!

Also @ Allie - are you suggesting that the workforce are all public schoolboys acting as gophers for the schoolmasters?!? :o>

"Fettling"? Are you *sure*? Sounds a bit... um... furtive and suspicious to me (actually, I'm not that sure what "fettling" means). Anyway, just a brief note to say Hi, well done, looks awesome, to thank you guys for the opportunity to be a part of this project, and to say I'll see you all tonight! S'gonna be weird walking in and not being immediately handed a hammer/hard-hat/blowtorch/etc!

Isn`t it a bit like whittling?

It's not as bad as fagging!! Yes, I typed 'fagging work force' instead of 'flagging workforce' in my earlier post. Prolly appplies to Vern anyway but apologies to the rest of you…

This place is stunning and just wait until the bouldering wall is in. Built by climbers for climbers with a tremendous ammount of love and affection and hard work by Phil, Paula, Rob and the team. The photos do not do it justice you have to see it to believe it.Lets get behind it and all spread the word.

fantastic wall. Proberbly the best i have ever been to. Amazing routes which wonder all over the wall. My only negative comment is that no proof that i could tie in correctly or belay properly was required. I am cofident in my competance but still think it should be part of the conditions of membership that it is checked and not just assumed that because i ticked the box on the membership form.

I don't think I've ever been given a compulsory belay test at a wall.

Thanks! Glad you liked the wall and the routes.

With regard to the compulsory belay and/or knot test... We are members of the Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC) and follow their guidelines which are generally accepted as being industry best practice. Most climbings walls in the UK don't require a compulsory belay and/or knot test for members who sign in as 'competent' at those skills.

We opt to use hall patrols to check on our customers' safety, which gives a more realistic assessment of their skills in-use rather than being tested as a one-off. Although you may not have been aware of it, your ability to tie-in and belay will have been checked by one of our staff during your visit.

We have a non-confrontational approach to help members get their belaying right but we do not allow unsafe practices.

Me neither. The Warehouse at Gloucester asked me where I'd learnt to tie in and belay, and explained that they did quick tests for new members who'd just been taught by a mate, but not for those who'd been taught by a proper instructor at a climbing wall. Seemed a reasonable compromise IMO.

Guys, great wall and fantastic routes! I'll definitely be back soon.

Wow! Came over today to see what all the fuss was about... some amazing routes. For me, many of them a little too tough right now but great motivation to get climbing more cos there's a lot of really fun looking stuff! I'll be back... (Also, really friendly staff, great surroundings - feels like a sports centre not a disused warehouse!) Only quibble was the slight difficulty we had in finding it - I knew it was on Cecil Street but still couldn't find it - needs a big sign!

Quite clearly, fettling is like whittling, but for dwarves. It looks absolutely jaw droppingly fab and i'm looking forward to gettting back from the alps to come n play. You should be absolutley stoked with yourselves. love the paint job.....xxx
